How to tell if something is a scam

Scam phone calls and fake tech support

Callers claiming to be from Microsoft, the NBN, Telstra or your bank, warning of a "problem" and asking for remote access or payment. These are always scams — genuine companies don't cold-call you like this.

Scam emails and text messages

Urgent messages about a parcel, an account suspension or a refund, pushing you to click a link and enter your details. When in doubt, don't click — go to the company's website directly instead.

Fake websites and shopping scams

Prices that seem too good to be true, missing contact details, or unusual payment methods like gift cards or bank transfer.

Pop-ups claiming your computer is infected

A pop-up that won't close and shows a phone number is the scam itself. Real antivirus software never asks you to phone anyone.

What to do if you think you've been scammed

The first ten minutes matter:

  1. Stop all contact with the scammer immediately.
  2. Call your bank using the number on the back of your card — not any number the caller gave you.
  3. If you allowed remote access, disconnect the computer from the internet and turn it off.
  4. Report it to Scamwatch and the eSafety Commissioner.

Then call us — we can check your devices and accounts and help you lock things down.

Why scammers target older Australians

Older people are targeted deliberately: they're more likely to answer an unknown call and are seen as trusting. This is about the criminals' tactics, not any failing on the victim's part — and knowing the patterns is the best protection there is.

Our device safety check

We offer a straightforward on-site safety check: we review what's installed on your computer, look for anything suspicious, make sure your important accounts are secured with strong passwords, and answer any questions you have. It's a calm, no-pressure way to get peace of mind.

What Gadget Geeks will never do

We will never call you unexpectedly asking for a password, never ask you to buy gift cards, and never request remote access unless you contacted us first. If anyone claiming to be from us does, it isn't us — please call us on 0400 771 828.

Online safety FAQs

Is my computer really infected?

Very often the warning is the scam, not a real infection. We can check properly and tell you the truth.

Do I need antivirus on Windows 11?

Windows 11's built-in Defender is enough for most home users. We'll give you an honest, commission-free view of whether you need anything more.

Should I let someone remote into my computer?

Only if you called them first and trust them. Never grant remote access to someone who contacted you out of the blue.

How do I know a caller is really from my bank?

Hang up and call the bank back on the number printed on your card or statement. A real bank will never mind you doing this.
